Travel, Credit Card & Aviation News | The Points Guy https://thepointsguy.com Maximize your travel. Wed, 28 May 2025 14:48:29 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.7.2 How to still get a free checked bag on Southwest flights https://thepointsguy.com/news/southwest-credit-cards-waive-bag-fees/ Wed, 28 May 2025 15:30:43 +0000 https://thepointsguy.com/?p=1808502 It’s the end of an era.

Southwest Airlines is now charging bag fees for all flights booked from May 28 onward. It’s an unfortunate change for Southwest and budget flyers who enjoyed two free checked bags on all flights.

For flights booked prior to May 28 for travel later in the year, your bags will still fly free, as long as you don’t change the reservation in any way.

If you don’t have any upcoming travel plans, applying for a new Southwest credit card or being a Southwest cardholder just became the right course of action.

As a reminder, the new bag fees are $35 for the first bag and $45 for the second bag.

1 free checked bag with Southwest credit cards

Southwest overhauled its entire business model by adding bag fees, extra-legroom seats, new fare classes, and seat selection.

These changes have made Southwest credit cards a worthwhile investment because cardholders will now receive one checked bag for free. This perk also applies to up to eight companions traveling with the main cardholder on the same reservation.

Eligible credit cards that offer a free checked bag for Southwest flights include:

The information for the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

SEAN CUDAHY/THE POINTS GUY

If you fly Southwest a couple of times a year, the $69-annual-fee Southwest Plus card may be enough for you. By taking one round-trip flight where you check one bag each way, you’ll effectively break even with the annual fee.

On top of an easy way to get a checked bag on all Southwest flights without paying a hefty annual fee, the entry-level card also provides you with a standard seat selection 48 hours prior to departure, when available.

If you want more benefits apart from a free checked bag, such as selecting a preferred seat at the time of booking or an upgrade to extra legroom within 48 hours, when available, consider other cards like the Southwest Priority or Southwest Performance Business.

Elite status

Another way to get a free checked bag or two is with Southwest elite status. A-List members will get one free checked bag, and A-List Preferred members will still get two free checked bags. If you’re a frequent Southwest flyer, elite status will pay off in terms of baggage allowance.

Bottom line

The day is finally upon us, and Southwest has joined the ranks of all the other legacy carriers in charging for checked bags.

Don’t let these changes discourage you. Being a Southwest cardholder (or having the right elite status) can still get you free checked bags.

Ultimately, if you’re committed to Southwest but aren’t a cardholder, it’s best to apply for a Southwest credit card. If you fly often or fly as a family, a Southwest credit card can help you save hundreds of dollars a year.

Here’s my secret to the perfect cruise wardrobe that makes packing a breeze https://thepointsguy.com/news/perfect-cruise-wardrobe-tips/ Wed, 28 May 2025 14:30:53 +0000 https://thepointsguy.com/?p=1801113 From theme nights to gala celebrations to shore excursions, there’s no shortage of occasions to dress up for when you’re on a cruise. You may even need outfits for events like the Sail Away party or the captain’s reception. And if you don’t partake in the onboard fun, you’re bound to have FOMO. (I can still recall my disappointment on my first Virgin Voyages cruise when I realized I had forgotten to pack attire for Scarlet Night and emerged from my cabin in a black dress to find the entire ship awash in crimson.)

However, shopping for this clothing — especially those pieces that you might wear for just a few hours and maybe never again — doesn’t make much fiscal sense. Neither does overpacking, as storage and closet space on cruise ships can be tight.

For all my travels, but especially for cruises, I’ve found that my monthly clothing rental subscription is a lifesaver. It lets me select pieces of clothing tailored to all my adventures on land and on the open seas — even if that’s just Tuesday night dinner in the main dining room.

Clothing rentals keep your cruise wardrobe afloat

The basic business model for clothing rental subscriptions is the same: Subscribers pay a fee each month for a shipment (or multiple shipments) of a certain number of pieces. You wear them, send them back and select new pieces for your next shipment, with the understanding that if you keep a piece or two for a while longer because you really like them, you’ll receive that many fewer pieces in the next shipment.

Returns include free shipping, and you don’t need to wash or dry clean anything before sending it back.

Companies often offer the option to purchase pieces if you just can’t part with them after wearing them a few times. And despite a widespread misconception, you’re not receiving random shipments “based on your style” like with Stitch Fix or other mail-order shopping services; you’re actually selecting the exact clothing that appears on your doorstep.

cruise attire
KELLY MAGYARICS/FOR THE POINTS GUY

Several major operators exist for clothing subscriptions. URBN — the parent company of Anthropologie, Free People and Urban Outfitters — offers trend-forward and vintage-inspired women’s styles through Nuuly; the subscription plan is $98 per month for six pieces. Armoire’s subscription plans for women range from a four-item plan for $89 per month to an unlimited plan for $249 per month; it starts with a style quiz so the company can provide tailored suggestions.

For men’s clothing, Thred offers a three-, four- and five-piece subscription for $69, $99 and $119, respectively. Meanwhile, Taelor Style offers one or two shipments per month for $79 or $109, respectively; the latter is also available with a money-saving quarterly payment.

I’m loyal to Rent the Runway, which launched in 2009 with one-time rental dresses and gowns for galas, weddings and proms. It expanded to a subscription model including workwear, casual attire, formalwear, and even accessories like handbags and sunglasses. Its one-shipment plan costs $119 per month for five pieces, but I opt for the 10-piece, two-shipment plan for $144 per month. Both include full access to their “closet” of 750 designer brands — my favorites are Ulla Johnson, Scotch & Soda and Derek Lam.

I appreciate the thoughtful reviews and photos that other subscribers post (I post myself too). Many people include their measurements and the sizes they rented, so I can get a good idea of how something will look on me. (I stick to clothing with a minimum of a 4 out of 5 rating from a decent number of reviewers.) I can’t tell you the number of compliments I’ve received during my cruise travels when I wear a rental — couture really is cut differently and makes you feel more fabulous than ready-to-wear.

Snag the best laid-back looks on loan

Whichever company and subscription you select, you can use the favorites feature to “heart” items that speak to you. When I book a cruise and the date gets closer, I create a list specifically for the trip, then start adding to it. I select a lot more pieces than I’ll need, since when it comes time to place my order, my size might not be available. I seek pieces that are versatile as well as items for those unique, one-off events during the sailing (like a white party).

cruise attire
KELLY MAGYARICS/FOR THE POINTS GUY

For the former camp, since I have a limit of five pieces per shipment, I rule out anything that’s too basic — like shorts, T-shirts and casual tops — because those are already in my closet. Instead, I focus on items that I can mix and match. For example, I can wear a long printed skirt with different solid tops or tanks and pair them with sandals or my white Adidas sneakers for several days of excursions or walking tours. A lightweight sundress can do double duty as a bathing suit cover-up on the pool deck. Sleeveless or short-sleeve midi dresses or rompers work for daytime with flats or sandals and evenings with heels or wedges.

For men, polo shirts, button-down shirts and chinos can serve the same function, and a lightweight sport coat elevates the look for evenings — maybe with a few snazzy, easy-to-pack pocket squares. (Renting a neutral solid color provides more versatility as it’s easier to coordinate.) Though I love the look of linen, I opt for wrinkle-resistant fabrics unless I’m packing my travel steamer; cruise ship cabins usually don’t offer irons, and laundry service is expensive.

Sail with formal wear — no commitment required

When I’m selecting more elegant attire, I keep packing limitations top of mind as I try to avoid checking my luggage. There are gorgeous — and I mean stunning — gowns on the Rent the Runway site, but some, like those with heavy fabrics and detailed appliqués, are impractical if you’re trying to pack light.

That’s why I always read the product information about the fabric as well as the reviews, which often mention weight. But if limited luggage isn’t a concern, then feel free to rent that floor-length silver sequined gown. For men, if space permits, a dark navy or charcoal suit can work for formal nights.

As far as those special events and parties onboard that require “costume” attire, my suggestion is to earmark only one of your rentals that you can wear another time during the cruise — any more than that and you’re not getting bang for your buck, subscription-wise.

I rented a white dress for a white party on an MSC World Europa sailing, which I was able to wear again for dinner another evening. I don’t buy white clothing as it makes me look washed out, and I’m also afraid of spills. But it was liberating to step out of my comfort zone that week, commitment-free.

If you don’t want to go all-out with themed clothing, just don one detail. Rent a red shirt or blouse and pair it with jeans or white pants for red night, or pick a retro print for ’70s night. Tropical attire is ubiquitous on clothing rental sites, at least for women, as there are tons of midi and maxi floral-printed dresses and skirts; those can do the heavy-lifting for a Hawaiian party, port shopping and an upscale dinner.

Of course, cruises aren’t always limited to sailing the Caribbean islands or popping around the Mediterranean. For cooler trips like Alaskan cruises or expedition itineraries, you can rent sweaters and heavy outerwear for outdoor pursuits.

Whatever you rent, keep in mind that it’s a finite number. I use my shipment as the basis for my wardrobe, then supplement it with a few things from my closet. Oh, and remember: You’ve booked your cruise to relax, so it’s not the time to stress about outfit repeats. Everyone does it, and no one’s keeping score.

Why now is the perfect time to get the Frontier Airlines World Mastercard https://thepointsguy.com/news/perfect-time-to-apply-frontier-mastercard/ Wed, 28 May 2025 14:15:35 +0000 https://thepointsguy.com/?p=1787677 Last year, I applied (and was approved) for the Frontier Airlines World Mastercard® hoping to take advantage of the airline’s many affordable flights from airports near my home on Florida’s east coast. At the time, it seemed like a smart move — but in hindsight, it turned out to be downright genius.

Since adding the card to my wallet, Frontier Airlines has continuously leveled up the perks for cardmembers — and it feels like the airline is just getting started.

Here’s why now is the perfect time to apply for the Frontier Airlines World Mastercard and elevate your travel game.

Complimentary upgrades

NICK EWEN/THE POINTS GUY

When you’re approved for the Frontier Airlines World Mastercard, you can unlock instant Elite Gold status for 90 days after making your first purchase in the first 90 days. Even better? You can extend it for a full year by spending $3,000 in the first 90 days, which (naturally) I made sure to do.

Elite Gold status comes with plenty of perks, but the newest one is complimentary upgrades to the carrier’s UpFront Plus seats. And here’s the kicker: These seats will soon be replaced with first-class seats (in late 2025).

Read more: Frontier Miles elite status: What it is and how to earn it

On a recent flight from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY), I got to see this perk in action. As an Elite Gold member, my upgrade window opened four hours before departure.

As my wife drove us to the airport, I pulled up the Frontier app, and right on the main dashboard was an option to upgrade my seat. I had already selected a complimentary seat for myself (and paid for seats for my wife and daughter), but when I pulled up the seat map, there were four UpFront Plus seats still available.

FRONTIER AIRLINES

I’m a big fan of the window seat, so I snagged 2F — and after tapping “Continue,” my new seat was confirmed.

Upon boarding with Zone 1 (another perk of Elite Gold status), I stepped onto the Airbus A321neo — with a curassow (a type of bird) on the tail — and noted the blocked middle seat.

But even more importantly, I was thrilled with the legroom I found.

It gave me plenty of room to stretch out and catch up on some Netflix downloads that had piled up on my Kindle.

And when the new first-class seats roll out, you can bet I’ll be first in line to upgrade.

Companion travel

couple at an airport together ready to go on holiday
SOLSTOCK/GETTY IMAGES

Plenty of airlines offer companion perks for frequent flyers or credit card members, but Frontier’s new companion benefit stands above the rest.

As of May 7, Elite Platinum and Elite Diamond travelers can bring a companion with them on every flight they take. And the best part? You’re not limited to a single companion — you can swap them out with each booking.

I know what you’re thinking. Surely, there are some onerous requirements to use this perk. But surprisingly, the requirements are minimal:

  • Your companion needs to be a Frontier Miles member.
  • You must add them at the time of booking.
  • You must pay applicable taxes and fees (starting at $5.60 each way) for their ticket.

That’s it. No sneaky fine print or blackout dates — just unlimited companion travel as long as you maintain Elite Platinum or Elite Diamond status.

And the Frontier World Mastercard makes it even easier to reach those elite status tiers.

For starters, you earn 1 Elite Status Point for every dollar spent on the card. Spend $50,000 in a calendar year, and you’ll hit Elite Platinum status outright — no flights required.

Or, you can mix card spending with Frontier purchases. As an Elite Gold member, you’ll earn at a rate of 14 Elite Status Points per dollar spent.

New (and better) redemption options

Frontier has long allowed its members to use miles for flights, with redemptions starting at 10,000 miles. However, the carrier recently lowered that to just 5,000 miles, allowing you to stretch your rewards twice as far.

I recently took advantage of this when I booked a flight for a friend to visit her family in the Washington, D.C., area using my miles. As a Frontier cardmember, I also enjoyed a waived redemption fee on the booking. In total, it required just 5,000 miles plus $5.60 out of pocket for a nonstop flight at a perfect departure time for her schedule.

But you’ll soon have even more flexibility for your miles.

By summer, Frontier will allow you to redeem miles for bag and seat bundles, giving you even more flexibility to save on your flights. As a cardmember, your miles never expire, so you can hold onto them until you’re ready to put them to use.

Other money-saving benefits

The Frontier Airlines World Mastercard isn’t just about flights. It also allows you to save more money with these valuable perks:

  • Free checked bags: Cardmembers can receive two free checked bags (up to 40 pounds each) on every Frontier flight they take, a perk that was just added in 2024. On my recent trip to New Orleans, that perk alone saved me $76 per checked bag, more than covering the card’s $99 annual fee (see rates and fees).
  • Complimentary carry-on: With your instant Elite Gold status, you’ll also enjoy a complimentary carry-on bag, yet another huge way for travelers to save money.
  • Annual flight voucher: Spend at least $2,500 during your card membership year, and you’ll receive a $100 Frontier flight voucher on your account anniversary.
  • Welcome bonus of 50,000 miles: New cardmembers earn 50,000 bonus miles after spending $1,000 on purchases and paying the annual fee in full, both within the first 90 days of account opening. That’s enough for up to 12 one-way domestic award flights, which is perfect for planning your next round of getaways.

Terms and conditions apply.

All of this adds up to some serious value — both in the first year and beyond.

Bottom line

Frontier Airlines has been making big moves, and 2025 is shaping up to be its most exciting year yet. With first-class seats, companion travel and enhanced redemption options, Frontier is putting a luxury (and rewarding) spin on budget-friendly travel.

If you want to be among the first to experience these exciting launches — and unlock a ton of benefits in the process — consider applying for the Frontier Airlines World Mastercard.

Iberia increases award rates to Spain, but they are still a great deal https://thepointsguy.com/news/iberia-award-chart-devaluation-2025/ Wed, 28 May 2025 13:20:29 +0000 https://thepointsguy.com/?p=1808749 Club Iberia Plus has increased the costs of redemptions to and from Spain without warning, but they are still a smart way to redeem Avios. LoyaltyLobby first reported this news.

For many years, Club Iberia Plus (as well as British Airways Club) offered one of the best sweet spots in the points and miles industry, with nonstop lie-flat flights to Spain’s Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) starting at just 34,000 Avios each way.

Here’s what you need to know about the new Iberia award rates.

Iberia will continue to utilize an award chart, pricing flights with peak and off-peak dates. The price of all Iberia-operated flights has been adjusted (both short- and long-haul), with the following rates for North American services, each way, per person, plus reasonable fees, taxes and surcharges:

Nonstop routes to MAD Off-peak rate (Avios) Peak rate (Avios)
  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
  • John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Dulles International Airport (IAD)
  • Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU)

  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • Economy Basic: 24,000 (down from 25,500)
  • Economy Comfort: 37,250 (up from 33,250)
  • Premium economy: 44,000 (up from 38,250)
  • Business: 60,500 (up from 51,500)
  • Economy Basic: 29,250 (down from 30,000)
  • Economy Comfort: 46,500 (up from 42,000)
  • Premium economy: 60,500 (up from 52,500)
  • Business: 88,500 (up from 75,000)

While the cost of Iberia’s cheapest Economy Basic rates has reduced slightly, all other awards have increased by around 10-20%, depending on routes, fare classes and dates.

These rates are still attractive even after the increases, particularly if you can travel during off-peak dates. With other programs switching to dynamic pricing and business-class flight redemptions to Europe being priced at 350,000 miles or more, being able to book a lie-flat Iberia flight to Spain for only 40,500 Avios represents great value.

The British Airways Club has increased the redemption cost of flights operated by Iberia in the same way, so you’ll pay the same price whether you redeem Avios through Club Iberia Plus or the British Airways Club.

You may find the British Airways website easier to navigate than Iberia’s booking platform.

How to earn Iberia Avios

Iberia A321XLR
BEN SMITHSON/THE POINTS GUY

Avios are one of the easiest currencies to earn. At least one Avios program partners with all major transferable currencies, and you can transfer Avios between any Avios program at a 1:1 rate.

There are also transfer bonuses to Avios programs from time to time, meaning you may need even fewer credit card points for the rates above.

Bottom line

While no-notice devaluations are an unpleasant reality of redeeming points and miles, this could have been much worse. For so many years, you could fly business class to Europe for as little as 34,000 Avios each way, a testament to the value of the Club Iberia Plus loyalty program.

The new rates, now approximately 10-20% higher, still represent a great way to fly to Spain, especially in business class, given how easy Avios are to redeem.

Emirates Skywards and Marriott Bonvoy expand partnership https://thepointsguy.com/news/emirates-marriott-partnership/ Tue, 27 May 2025 21:00:02 +0000 https://thepointsguy.com/?p=1808546 Emirates Skywards and Marriott Bonvoy have partnered in various forms over the years. But now, members can convert Emirates Skywards miles to Marriott points at a rate of 3 miles to 2 points.

Here’s an overview of what you can expect from the Emirates and Marriott partnership.

Benefits and earnings

If you have Marriott Bonvoy and Emirates Skywards accounts, you might as well link them. After all, select members of both programs can earn rewards in both programs and enjoy select benefits on eligible flights and hotel stays.

Woman using a laptop
MINISERIES/GETTY IMAGES

Emirates Skywards Silver members and higher can earn 1 Skywards mile per dollar spent on eligible stays at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy (in addition to earning Marriott points as usual). Plus, Emirates Skywards Gold members and higher get additional benefits at Marriott Bonvoy hotels and resorts, including 4 p.m. late checkout (subject to availability) and complimentary in-room Wi-Fi.

Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite members and higher can earn 3 Marriott points per dollar spent on eligible Emirates flights (in addition to earning Skywards miles as usual). Marriott Platinum Elite members and higher can enjoy select in-airport benefits, including priority check-in and boarding.

Related: The best credit cards to reach elite status

Convert rewards

All Marriott Bonvoy and Emirates Skywards members can convert rewards between the two programs.

You can convert 3 Marriott points into 1 Skyward mile. Plus, you’ll get 5,000 bonus Skywards miles for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points you convert. This conversion opportunity could become increasingly important since Citi ThankYou will devalue its Emirates transfer ratio on July 27, and Amex and Chase are pausing transfers to Emirates in late May (on May 28 for Amex and May 29 for Chase).

Plus, starting May 27, you can convert 3 Skywards miles into 2 Marriott points. The only requirement is to include at least 3,000 Skywards miles per conversion.

However, just because you can convert rewards doesn’t mean you should. TPG’s May 2025 valuations peg the value of Emirates miles at 1.2 cents each and Marriott points at 0.7 cents each. So, you’ll theoretically lose value when you transfer rewards in either direction.

Related: When does it make sense to transfer Marriott points to airlines?

Bottom line

Dual earning opportunities are a pure win for travelers, as earning more rewards is always nice. However, consider carefully before converting rewards between the Marriott Bonvoy and Emirates Skywards programs. Specifically, ensure you’re getting good value and wouldn’t be better off transferring rewards from another program, buying points or miles or booking your flight or stay via a different method.

Summer 2025 travel already breaking records: Our top tips to keep you sane https://thepointsguy.com/news/summer-travel-tips/ Tue, 27 May 2025 16:10:02 +0000 https://thepointsguy.com/?p=1808489 Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of the busy summer travel season. Despite some warnings about falling demand, the summer travel kickoff was another one for the record books.

May 23, the Friday before the long holiday weekend, was the third-busiest day ever for the Transportation Security Administration, with the agency screening more than 3 million people.

If Memorial Day weekend is any indication, it’s going to be a busy summer for both domestic and international travel.

Record-breaking summer travel expected

Airlines for America is forecasting another record summer travel season, telling TPG that “U.S. airlines will carry 272 million passengers from June 1 through August 31. To accommodate this demand, U.S. airlines will operate 27,000 flights daily — up 4 percent from last year.” That is 1,000 additional flights year-over-year.

To give some context, A4A estimated 271 million people would travel in 2024, and the year before just 255 million.

Related: Finding the best summer flight deals: How to score cheap airfare, even at the last minute

“Premium and international demand this summer are expected to remain strong, with the top foreign destinations for U.S. airlines projected to be Mexico, Canada, Dominican Republic, United Kingdom and Italy,” said A4A.

U.S. airlines performed fairly well over the long Memorial Day weekend despite a series of thunderstorms that led to delays and cancellations in Colorado and Texas. Airlines appear to be recovering more quickly without the cataclysmic failures in the system we saw back in 2022 and 2023.

Still, it’s better to be prepared for anything. Here are a few of my top tips to help you stay sane this summer.

Reserve parking

car in parking lot
CLINT HENDERSON/THE POINTS GUY

As travel demand has increased, so too has the need for airport parking. We are increasingly seeing “sold out” signs pop up at many airport parking lots.

To ensure you aren’t stuck searching for a spot that may or may not exist, lock in that reservation now. Most airport parking lots offer prepaid or reserved parking, making it easy to book in advance. You may even find the rates are cheaper when you book ahead of time.

Allow extra time

Fountain at New York City's LaGuardia Airport (LGA).
Fountain at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA). CLINT HENDERSON/THE POINTS GUY

It’s going to be busy at the airport this summer, and you should plan accordingly. While we aren’t seeing the staffing shortages of a few years ago, there are only so many baggage handlers, ticket counter employees and security screeners. And remember — an ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers is messing things up and leading to delays and cancellations at airports like Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

My mantra for this summer (and the one many of my TPG colleagues share) is that you’re better safe than sorry. That’s why we suggest getting to the airport two hours early for domestic flights and three hours early for international flights — you just never know these days. And modern airports have so many conveniences and attractions that it’s not the worst thing to have a little extra time at the lounge or even to do some shopping.

Get Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or Clear — or all 3

TSA line at Honolulu International Airport (HNL). CLINT HENDERSON/THE POINTS GUY

At TPG, we always recommend using any security shortcuts, including enrolling in a Trusted Traveler Program like TSA PreCheck or Global Entry.

With these programs, the government essentially prescreens you for security, saving you a bit of time during your travels. You’ll need to apply ahead of time and pay a fee. The great news, though, is that many credit cards will give you a statement credit for these fees.

Related: 8 ways to get free or discounted TSA PreCheck, Global Entry and Clear

TSA PreCheck allows you to speed through airport security without removing your shoes, laptops or liquids. Meanwhile, with Global Entry, you can breeze through customs when you return from an international trip.

We recommend getting Global Entry rather than simply TSA PreCheck. Global Entry requires an interview with U.S. Customs and Border Protection ahead of time, but once you’re approved, TSA PreCheck will be included.

We also like Clear, another security program that allows you to bypass security lines. While Clear isn’t always faster, it will still generally lead to shorter lines. A Clear membership combined with TSA PreCheck will enable you to move even quicker at airports with designated Clear/TSA PreCheck lines.

Be smart when you are booking

Orlando International Airport (MCO).
Orlando International Airport (MCO). CLINT HENDERSON/THE POINTS GUY

Things can and do go wrong. Travelers these days have to be their own best advocates.

Book better

Think through each booking you make. Try to find a nonstop flight instead of a flight with multiple connections to reduce the risk of missing a flight or being delayed. This will also lessen the chance of having your luggage lost or misplaced.

We also recommend you take one of the first flights of the day, as early flights are less likely to face weather disruptions like afternoon thunderstorms — meaning they’re more likely to depart on time.

Related: Flight canceled or delayed? Here’s what to do next

Knowledge is power

Make sure you are tracking your flight and the weather.

Download your airline’s mobile app to keep track of potential flight delays in real time. Airline apps are your secret weapon in case things go wrong. Not only will you know when boarding starts, but you’ll also learn of any delays first. Some airlines even allow you to rebook yourself in the app (or buy yourself an upgrade) — and if your flight is canceled, you’ll want to beat everyone else on your flight who is also looking to get rebooked.

In the event of a cancellation or delay, we recommend heading to the main customer service desk ASAP (or the one at a lounge, if you have access). You could also get on the phone with the airline or contact the carrier via social media if there’s a delay. Sometimes, an airline’s social media representative will help you faster than a phone or in-person agent. You have to use every tool at your disposal when things go wrong.

Many airlines also now have live chat capabilities to help navigate delays and cancellations.

I always have an alternate plan (or two) in the back of my mind in case a flight gets canceled or delayed. I also look to see what other airlines are flying the route I’m taking in case something goes awry. This way, I’ll know what to ask for if I need to be rebooked.

I also like using Flightradar24 to track my flights, plus an app called Flighty. The latter helps me keep an eye on my flights and will often let me know before anyone else (even the airline) if there is a problem with my flight.

You can also use Google to track your flight. Simply put in the airline and flight number to see your flight status.

Know your rights

There’s good news regarding passenger rights: The latest set of Department of Transportation rules established last spring are quite passenger-friendly, requiring airlines to promptly refund passengers if they cancel their flights (or make a significant adjustment to the schedule).

You are entitled to a full refund to your original form of payment within a week if you paid by credit card and within three weeks if you used another payment method. This applies to flights delayed by three or more hours if flying within the U.S. and by at least six hours if flying internationally. Keep in mind, though, that airlines are only required to refund passengers who don’t use their tickets. If you accept the airline rebooking option, you won’t get a refund.

If you find yourself dealing with a delay or cancellation, remember to save all the receipts for the expenses you incur. You’ll want excellent documentation in case of meltdowns like the one Southwest Airlines passengers experienced during the 2022 winter holidays.

Bilt Rent Day (June 1): Up to a 200% Accor transfer bonus, new cities for Neighborhood Experiences and more https://thepointsguy.com/news/bilt-rent-day-promo/ Tue, 27 May 2025 15:00:58 +0000 https://thepointsguy.com/?p=1808411&preview=true&preview_id=1808411 Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information. TPG founder Brian Kelly is a Bilt adviser and investor.

Each month, Bilt Rewards launches special promotions on or around the first of the month. For this Bilt Rent Day, members can enjoy up to a 200% transfer bonus to Accor Live Limitless, up to a 100% bonus when redeeming Bilt Points for Lyft rides and the ability to book new neighborhood experiences.

Plus, as on previous Bilt Rent Days, you can snag double points for nonrent purchases (up to 1,000 bonus points) and play the “Rent Free” game. Remember that you must use your Bilt Mastercard® (see rates and fees) five times each statement period to earn points (see rewards and benefits).

Here’s what you need to know about the June Bilt Rent Day promotions.

Up to 200% Accor Live Limitless transfer bonus

Bilt is offering its members up to a 200% Accor Live Limitless transfer bonus this Rent Day. Specifically, Platinum and Gold members will get a 200% transfer bonus, while other Bilt members will get a 50% transfer bonus when transferring Bilt points to Accor between June 1 at midnight EDT and June 3 at 2:59 a.m. EDT.

Accor uses fixed value redemptions, giving a 20 euro (about $22.76) discount for every 1,000 points you redeem. You can usually transfer Bilt points to Accor at a 3:2 ratio, meaning you get 40 euros worth of Accor points for every 3,000 Bilt points you transfer. However, check out the following table to see how this transfer bonus changes the math.

Without a transfer bonus 50% transfer bonus 200% transfer bonus
Transfer ratio 3:2 3:3 3:6
Accor points per 3,000 Bilt points 2,000 points 3,000 points 6,000 points
Value in euros of Accor points received when transferring 3,000 Bilt points 40 euros 60 euros 120 euros
Euro cents of value per Bilt point transferred 1.33 euro cents per point 2 euro cents per point 4 euro cents per point
Cents of value per Bilt point transferred (assuming 1 euro equals $1.14) 1.52 cents per point 2.28 cents per point 4.55 cents per point

A redemption rate of 2.28 cents per point for Blue and Silver members is decent, though you may still get higher redemption rates when transferring to other Bilt transfer partners, such as World of Hyatt. However, the 4.55 cents per point that Gold and Platinum members can get during this transfer bonus is worth considering.

As a reminder, brands like Fairmont, Sofitel and Mercure are bookable through Accor Live Limitless. In some markets, such as the part of Salvador, Brazil, I’m visiting this July, Accor may be the primary (or only) major international hotel loyalty program you can book through. So, especially if you have Bilt Platinum or Gold status, it’s worth checking whether your upcoming lodging needs could benefit from this Accor transfer bonus.

Accor transfers to Air France-KLM Flying Blue on a 1:1 basis as well, so keep that in mind if you are looking to stock up on Flying Blue miles.

Lyft redemption bonus

Bilt is offering its members who have linked their Lyft and Bilt accounts a status-based redemption bonus when they redeem Bilt points for Lyft rides between May 27 at 9 a.m. EDT and June 3 at 2:59 a.m. EDT. Specifically, Gold and Platinum members get a 100% redemption bonus while other members get a 50% redemption bonus.

Bilt told its partners, including TPG, that this redemption bonus “demonstrates how Bilt Points provide everyday value beyond travel and how our currency and features can be the most practical for members’ daily lives.” However, even with a 100% redemption bonus, you’ll only get 1.4 cents per point when redeeming Bilt points for Lyft rides (and with a 50% redemption bonus, you’ll only get 1.05 cents per point).

TPG’s May 2025 valuations peg the value of Bilt points at 2.05 cents each, which you can achieve by using many of the Bilt transfer partners. So, think carefully about other ways to use your Bilt points before redeeming them for Lyft rides (even during the June Rent Day redemption bonus).

Extra Bilt points on nonrent purchases

As on previous Bilt Rent Days, you’ll earn double points from June 1 at midnight EDT to June 2 at 2:59 a.m. EDT when you use your Bilt Mastercard (see rates and fees) to make nonrent purchases. You’ll earn as follows for purchases each Rent Day:

  • Dining: 6 points per dollar spent
  • Travel: 4 points per dollar spent
  • Other purchases (excluding rent): 2 points per dollar spent
  • Rent: 1 point per dollar spent (up to 100,000 points in a calendar year)

You must use the card five times per statement period to earn points (see rewards and benefits). Remember, you can only earn up to 1,000 bonus points on purchases with your Bilt Mastercard each Rent Day.

‘Rent Free’ game

In August 2023, Bilt launched a new way to win free rent for a month (up to $2,500): the “Rent Free” game show. Bilt has since offered the “Rent Free” game show each Rent Day, with a new creator or personality playing each month. This month, the guest is comedian Roy Wood Jr.

You’ll earn points by picking a highly ranked answer when you correctly rank that answer and when the celebrity guest picks the same answer as you. The top 10 winners will get their rent paid (up to $2,500), while the next 100 winners will earn 1,000 Bilt points. The next 500 winners beyond that will earn 100 points.

You can visit the Bilt app to play the game between May 27 at noon EDT and June 1 at 3 p.m. EDT. Then, return to the app after June 1 at 4 p.m. EDT to see your score.

A live DJ will start mixing music starting at 11 a.m. EDT, so hopefully, the complimentary heroes will last until then.

Each Bilt member can buy no more than two tickets for these special rides.

Last chance: Highest-ever Venture X Business welcome bonus — with an eye-watering minimum spending requirement https://thepointsguy.com/news/capital-one-venture-x-business-card-current-offer/ Tue, 27 May 2025 13:30:48 +0000 https://thepointsguy.com/?p=1807955&preview=true&preview_id=1807955 Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

After the successful launch of the personal Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card in 2021, Capital One began offering its business counterpart to the public in 2023.

Learn more: Capital One Venture X Business with its highest-ever bonus

Now, we’re seeing the highest-ever bonus offered on the Capital One Venture X Business. New cardholders can earn up to 350,000 miles — for a cool $200,000 minimum spending requirement. If you want to take advantage of this offer, act soon, as it will end on June 9.

If you’re a high-spending business owner and want to unlock a huge welcome bonus, this is a great offer to take advantage of. Let’s look at the details.

Capital One Venture X Business welcome offer

For a limited time, new applicants can take advantage of a tiered welcome offer. They’ll earn:

  • 150,000 bonus miles after spending $30,000 in the first three months
  • An additional 200,000 miles after spending $200,000 in the first six months

That’s a total of 350,000 miles, worth a whopping $6,475, according to our May 2025 valuations. That’s almost unheard of for a travel rewards credit card and is the best offer we’ve seen on this card since it was launched just over two years ago. This is the last chance to take advantage of this offer as it ends on June 9.

THE POINTS GUY

To maximize the bonus, we recommend transferring your miles to one of Capital One’s 15-plus airline and hotel partners.

You also have the option to redeem your miles for a statement credit to cover travel expenses at a rate of 1 cent per mile. Even if you go this lower-value route, the full bonus is still worth an impressive $3,500.

It carries a $395 annual fee, which is more than offset by an annual travel credit and bonus miles every year you hold the card (explained below).

Capital One Venture X Business benefits

The business version of the Venture X has the same reasonable annual fee that so many love about the personal version, plus many major benefits, including:

  • Access to luxury hotels: Cardholders can access Capital One’s Premier Collection and Lifestyle Collection programs for elitelike benefits when staying at participating hotels.
  • Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit: Receive up to $120 in statement credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.
  • Annual fee: The $395 annual fee is easily offset by the value of the annual credit and anniversary bonus, even before factoring in the value of the welcome offer, lounge access and the card’s earning potential.
  • No foreign transaction fees

Bottom line

If you’re a small-business owner whose business spends enough to earn the welcome bonus, the Capital One Venture X Business gives you the potential to earn tremendous rewards. This offer ends on June 9, so this is your last chance to earn the highest-ever welcome bonus on this card.

If your small business has lower expenses, you’ll likely want to go with the personal Venture X version or another of our favorite business credit cards.

Why you should apply for TSA PreCheck now https://thepointsguy.com/news/apply-for-tsa-precheck-now/ Tue, 27 May 2025 13:00:03 +0000 https://thepointsguy.com/?p=1804797 With Real ID live and summer travel about to come into full swing, travelers should be prepared for longer lines and potential delays moving through airport security lines. Travel analysts expect delays as the Transportation Security Administration takes the time to vet passengers without a Real ID or passport; there’s a good chance these delays could begin as peak travel brings larger crowds.

Here at TPG, we always take extra steps to make our travel experiences smoother. One of those steps includes applying for TSA PreCheck, a service we consider a must-have.

If you don’t have TSA PreCheck status yet, now is the time to pull the trigger and apply. TSA PreCheck will allow you to move through airport security faster and more efficiently, reducing or even erasing the impact of anticipated delays from Real ID woes and summer travel crowds.

Keep in mind that you’ll likely still need a Real ID to make it through the TSA PreCheck line at the airport. If you don’t have one, you may be directed to another line for additional screening.

Here’s what you need to know.

What is TSA PreCheck?

TSA PreCheck is a Trusted Traveler Program in the U.S. that allows prescreened travelers to use a special line when moving through airport security. This line is only open to those with TSA PreCheck, so you can expect shorter lines than general security.

TSA PreCheck line
DAVID TRAN/GETTY IMAGES

TSA PreCheck travelers are considered low-risk because of the screening they go through when they apply for the program. Thanks to this, if you’re a part of TSA PreCheck, you won’t have to remove your bag of liquids, belt, electronics, light jacket or shoes. This also helps speed up the security process.

Will I need a Real ID if I have TSA PreCheck?

Yes, you’ll still need a Real ID or passport if you have TSA PreCheck. TSA PreCheck can help you get through airport security faster, but it isn’t meant to help you circumvent identification requirements.

Related: Which airports and airlines use TSA PreCheck?

Why you should apply for TSA PreCheck now

Unfortunately, the launch of Real ID coincides with the beginning of summer travel. Summer travel brings peak crowds through U.S. airports. When combined with predicted screening delays due to travelers without a proper ID, it’s easy to see why delays are likely.

TSA PreCheck is especially critical for those who prefer to arrive at the airport without much time to spare prior to their flight’s departure. If you get stuck in general security for an unexpectedly long amount of time, you may miss your flight.

Woman using a laptop
MINISERIES/GETTY IMAGES

It typically takes just three to five days to get approved for TSA PreCheck and to receive your Known Traveler Number. You should still have time to lock in your TSA PreCheck status before your summer trips.

That said, approval can take up to 60 days, so it’s important to submit your application as soon as possible to avoid crowds and delays this year.

How much does TSA PreCheck cost?

To apply for TSA PreCheck, you’ll need to pay a $76.75 to $85 fee. (The exact amount depends on which partner you use for enrollment; you can sign up for the program via Idemia, Telos or Clear.)

If you’re a frequent international traveler, you may want to consider Global Entry instead. While applying for that program costs $120, if approved, you’ll receive both Global Entry and TSA PreCheck status. Global Entry provides expedited screening at the borders.

I applied for Global Entry instead of just TSA PreCheck; I recommend it to everyone I know who travels, as long as they expect to leave the U.S. at least once a year. The process for Global Entry is generally more involved and takes longer to get through, so keep that in mind if you need TSA PreCheck for upcoming travel.

Related: Global Entry vs. TSA PreCheck: Which is more beneficial?

Cards that will cover your TSA PreCheck application fee

One of the best things about travel rewards cards is that many of them will cover your TSA PreCheck application fee. If you have a travel card in your wallet, check your benefits guide to see if you have a TSA PreCheck credit available to use.

If you don’t have a card with a TSA PreCheck application fee credit, consider one of our favorite cards with this perk:

The information for the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

CHASE

Although your TSA PreCheck status only needs to be renewed every five years, your card’s credit can help offset its annual fee when it’s time to renew.

If paying an annual fee isn’t an option for you, the Altitude Connect lacks one and provides up to $100 to cover your TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application.

Related: Best credit cards for Global Entry and TSA PreCheck

Is it hard to get TSA PreCheck?

Generally speaking, no. If you don’t have a criminal record, you should have an easy time getting approved for TSA PreCheck. When considering you for approval, the TSA has to decide whether you’re a potential security risk to the U.S.

Only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals and lawful permanent residents can apply for TSA PreCheck.

Bottom line

Whether TSA PreCheck has been on your radar or not, now is a great time to submit an application. It doesn’t take a lot of effort, and you probably already have a card in your wallet that can cover your application fee.

Give yourself the gift of avoiding crowds and delays with a TSA PreCheck membership. While you’re at it, consider some other airport hacks that can save you time and money.

Southwest Airlines reveals how much checked bags will cost as new fees take effect this week https://thepointsguy.com/news/southwest-airlines-bag-fees/ Tue, 27 May 2025 11:58:05 +0000 https://thepointsguy.com/?p=1808439 Southwest Airlines has revealed how much checked bags will cost customers, as the carrier’s new fees go into effect this week. It’ll look quite similar to other airlines.

Starting Wednesday, Southwest will charge most passengers $35 for their first checked bag, an airline spokesperson confirmed to TPG early Tuesday.

That’s in line with the bag fees currently assessed by most of the other large U.S. carriers.

Passengers will pay $45 for their second checked bag on Southwest.

The new fees will apply to flights booked from May 28 onward, which means travelers who already booked a summer trip will get to enjoy the airline’s “bags fly free” policy on that trip and on any other existing bookings. Plus, any bookings made by the end of the day on May 27 would also be eligible for free bags, so if you know your travel plans for later this year, or even the holidays, you might consider locking that flight in by the end of the day Tuesday.

How to get free bags on Southwest

Beyond that, Southwest has laid out a few new ways passengers will be able to retain free bags when flying with the airline:

  • Passengers who book the carrier’s highest-level Business Select fare will get two free bags. Later this year, Business Select will become “Choice Extra” when Southwest starts selling assigned seating for 2026. This fare class will eventually include access to the carrier’s new extra legroom seats.
  • Rapid Rewards members who earn A-List Preferred elite status will still get two free checked bags.
  • A-List members will get one free bag.
  • All Southwest Rapid Rewards cobranded Chase credit card holders will get one free checked bag.
Alaska Airlines At San Diego International Airport
KEVIN CARTER/GETTY IMAGES

Why is Southwest ending bags fly free?

Southwest is largely following in the footsteps of its top competitors in setting the prices for its first-ever bag fees.

The “Big Three” network airlines (American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines) each charge $35 for the first checked bag, though in some cases, you have to meet certain criteria to get that price, such as paying for your bag ahead of time.

It’s the latest example of Southwest making a move to look far more like its competitors, from ditching its two-free-bags policy that largely stood alone in the U.S. airline industry, to ending its hallmark open seating policy and overhauling its one-of-a-kind boarding policy.

In making the move, Southwest CEO Bob Jordan cited a need to boost the airline’s profits, which have been lackluster in recent years.

Last year, executives said Southwest’s free bags policy was among the top reasons customers chose to fly the airline over its competitors.
